GENERAL GUIDELINES

Insurance

Please make sure that you check with your insurance company to ensure that your choice of wheels is compatible with your car.

Rims

  • Double-sided safety rims are mandatory for road use.
  • The minimum acceptable wheel rim width is 5″.
  • The maximum acceptable wheel rim width is 10″.
  • Modifications to wheel rims are to be carried out by an approved “wheel works”.
  • No steel wheel rim is permitted to have more than one weld around its circumference.
  • The wheel rim should locate on the hub centre.
  • Slotted stud type multi-fit wheels are not permitted.
  • The front wheel rim width must be at least 60% of the width of the rear wheel rim.
  • For 5″ front rims the maximum rear rim width is therefore 8″, and if 9″ or 10″ rear rims are to be fitted, the front rim width must be at least 6″.

Wheels Studs and Nuts

  • Ensure that only the correct nut is used for both the wheel and the stud size (ie 1/2″ studs use 1/2″ nuts) and that the outer diameter of a mag wheel nut corresponds to the inner diameter of the corresponding hole for the nut in the rim.
  • Only nuts specified for use as wheel nuts are to be used.
  • Ensure that the taper on the wheel nut corresponds to the taper of the mating flange on the nut. Also ensure that the nut or stud is neither too short nor too long for the application. The hollow type of nut used in early “mags” must end no more than 3mm from the inner surface of the wheel.
  • Wheel nuts for “mag” and alloy rims must be fitted with a steel washer between the wheel and the nut, unless the wheels are designed for a tapered nut (e.g. BMW).
  • Where rims are sourced from a particular model vehicle, the length of the studs used must be at least as long as those fitted to the parent vehicle, and all studs must be fitted with a nut.

Tyres

  • Only tyres manufactured for road use are to be used on public roads. Racing tyres and slicks are not permitted.
  • Tyres must be fitted to rims in accordance with the Tyre and Rim Association Standards Manual. Guidelines for 5″ to 10″ rims are included in Appendix 1. {Advisory Note: If in doubt about the proposed rim and tyre combination, consult an Examiner, or refer to the Tyre and Rim Association Standards Manual.}
  • National Guidelines for the Construction and Modification of Street Rods in Australia 58 Tyres must not contact any part of the vehicle through full suspension and steering travel and the tread of the tyre must not protrude beyond any fitted mudguard.
  • Radial tyres are recommended, as is the use of similar construction tyres on all wheels. For your safety do not mix radial tyres with bias construction tyres.
  • Tyre speed rating must match vehicle performance. Minimum requirement is “S” rating (180km/h).
  • For safety reasons, dummy or false whitewalls are not to be fitted to radial tyres.

Track

  • When an axle or suspension unit is altered and that alteration changes the distance between the wheel mounting flanges, the track of that modified assembly becomes the measurable track of that axle. To assess the track variation with the proposed wheels and tyres, fit original manufacturers wheel rims and measure between the centres of the rims.
  • A differential may be shortened for the purposes of enabling the tyres to fit inside the vehicle mudguards, but differentials that have been narrowed for the purpose of accommodating rims wider than 10″ must not be used.
  • Front and rear track measurements must not be increased or decreased from the original specification of the axle by more than 50mm.
  • The difference between front and rear track must not exceed 75mm.
