Proper Cleaning of Your Wheels and Rims

Following these simple steps will enhance the beauty of your car and will help your wheels look great for years to come!

Cleaning Wheels with a Painted Finish

When cleaning your new wheels, we recommend that you refrain from using chemical wheel cleaners. Many of them contain caustic chemicals that can damage the clear-coated finish by clouding it or even removing it. If you wash your vehicle on a regular basis, there is really no need to use them. When washing your vehicle, start with the wheels first. Try to wash them when they are cool, not after a long drive. The brakes heat the wheels up, making them difficult to clean and dry and you can warp your vehicles brake disc rotors if rapidly cooled with water.

Since the finish on your wheels is similar to your vehicle’s paint job, use a mild detergent that is designed for use on automotive finishes. Use a washing mitt or a soft sponge. Never use any type of brush or abrasive pad as these will scratch and damage the finish. Since the finish of your wheels is similar to your vehicle’s paint job, it is a good idea to wax the exposed areas of your wheels 3 to 4 times per year or more if you live in a harsh climate. This will maintain that new look longer and will help keep road grime and the elements from damaging the finish of your new wheels.

Cleaning Wheels with a Chrome Plated Finish

The same rules apply for chrome plated wheels as for wheels with a painted finish. Chrome plating is more delicate and does require more care. You may wish to clean and wax them more often. Be sure not use any abrasive chrome polishes as this could scratch the chrome plating. If you live in a climate where road salts are used in the winter months, we recommend that you remove your plated wheels during this time. Chrome plated wheels will rapidly pit and become cloudy when exposed to road salt for any extended period as the salt contains chemicals which breaks down the finish on this type of wheel.

DRIVING SAFETY

Don’t become an aggressive driver.

Be aware of the posted speed limit and obey it. Yelling, honking the horn, slamming on the brakes in front of a tailgater, passing on the road shoulder, speeding, improper gestures… All of these can quickly create a dangerous situation. Be aware of the real danger, and keep your temper in check. Don’t drive when angry, over-tyred or upset. Avoid conflict, even if you are right. Allow extra time and avoid congestion whenever possible.

Stay Alert

Be rested, calm and not under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Avoid distracting activities like eating or engaging in conversations with passengers.

Defensive Driving

Use your imagination. Always be ready to react to the other drivers, in case they don’t do what they should – or what you think they should. If you cannot avoid a crash, try to choose the least dangerous option. For example, you often have more chance of surviving running off the road than hitting another vehicle head-on.

Slow Down

Going too slow can be hazardous, but whenever you find yourself in difficult conditions like fog, rain, snow or glare, reduce your speed. Don’t rush or lose patience.

Pay attention to the different seasonal driving conditions

You must prepare your car and tyres well in advance for Winter, but also for the other seasons. Fog, excessive rainfall, snow and ice, and glare and heat all bring specific kinds of adjustments and maintenance.

Consciously work on acquiring the right level of awareness and attitude

A simple trick to increase awareness of your own strengths and weaknesses is to do a “running commentary” once, out loud, as you drive. This will give you a more complete picture of everything that is happening. You may notice new factors that can affect your safety. And lastly, it may improve your self-knowledge, making you aware of potential weak points and dangers, like lack of concentration or mistakes in anticipating behavior of other drivers.

Become a good night time driver.

Night driving can be a pleasure if you are aware of the special alertness demanded by low visibility. A few fundamentals: Keep your headlights and tail lights on for the entyre period between sunset and sunrise. Put your headlights on low-beam when another vehicle is within 200 metres, also when driving behind another vehicle. If your car breaks down at night, make sure other drivers can see your car and stop in time. Turn on the hazard warning lights. If possible, pull off the road. Avoid stopping just over a hill or just around a curve. Take good notice of roadside reflectors and any other helpful visual signals to stay on the road at night.

Be aware of your physical condition.

You need good vision and good hearing, and you must be alert and responsive. Never drive when:

You have been drinking alcohol or consuming drugs

You have taken any prescription or over-the-counter medicine that can cause drowsiness

You are under the influence of any drug that may affect your performance or perception

You are very tired

You are emotionally upset – this can cause you to become careless.

Pay attention to the special requirements of different seasons.
